The Solution Within: How Consultants Help You Find The Answers

Is your home always a pleasant temperature?

If you are busy planning a new home for your family, there will be several factors to consider. You will be concerned about finding somewhere to build in an area that you like, and that has a lot that is suitable for your proposed build. As for the property, you must think about the internal design, and how many rooms you will need. You must also consider the external appearance and how the property will blend into the neighbourhood. Each of these issues is important, and they must all be settled before the project can progress. However, there is at least one further issue that should concern any homebuilder.

A home where living is easy

Any home that you build must be a good fit for your family. The rooms must be the right size and the layout must make sense for the way the home will be used. However, have you adequately considered whether the property will be comfortable to live in and economical to run in the years ahead. Having an energy-efficient home design can make an enormous difference to how much you enjoy your home. If you create a home that looks great, but which is always hot and stuffy, or which feels cold even on the warmest day, you will be spending a large part of your budget on temperature control every month. It is far better to create an energy-efficient home design and incorporate materials and appropriate design elements in your plans from the start.

What makes an energy-efficient home design

Materials: Building a home that is energy efficient will involve several elements. Begin by thinking through the materials used in the construction of your property. Are these materials good at transferring heat or providing a barrier that will help to maintain the desired temperature? Do you know the thermal mass of each of the materials you will be using?

Moisture control: There is little that makes a home more miserable than unwanted moisture. You must discuss moisture control with your design team and find a way to ensure that your chosen design has an effective moisture barrier that will prevent mildew and mould from gaining entry into the property.

Local conditions: Planning an energy-efficient home design can only be done once you have determined where the property will be built. To reduce energy usage, you will want to take advantage of natural light and heat from the sun. Plan a layout that keeps the rooms you will use in daylight hours on the side of the house that gets the most natural light. If you are building a breakfast room, consider where the sun will be in the morning. Planning your home around where the most light will be can save you money for all the years you live in the home, and make it naturally more comfortable every day.
